World No. 1 and Grand Slam career winner of 25-year-old Maria Sharapova will be the standard bearer of Russia at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Games, to be held on 27 July. That was reported by the Russian tennis Federation President Shamil Tarpischev. 

“We have reached agreement with Sharapova after Saturday's round of Roland Garros”, - said Tarpiseva.

Thus, Sharapova becomes the first female carries in the history of Russia.
